Established in 1925, we are Sewanee’s oldest student-run literary magazine.
The Mountain Goat Journal’s founding purpose was to provide a platform to uplift student voices and support them in their creation of original work. Our intentions have grown into promoting student work while supporting efforts to build community around writers and artists, whether through events, partnerships, or long-term projects.
Our mission is simple: to encourage young people to put their work out into the world. In addition to sharing student work, we hold community workshops and public readings designed to encourage relationship building and ongoing learning. We believe in the healing power of the arts to foster connection, build resilience, and promote growth. We exist to support these efforts in our own university community, and hopefully to inspire those beyond our gates to seek out and support their local artists and writers.
